The Sci Project
April-June 2015
Introduction to the Project.
For this project we wrote a book once again as a class. This time we had to incorporate science to our short story. Everyone had to write a story that we would later turn into a novel. We will have a total of 52 short stories because there are 52 students. We will later exhibit our book at a book store on June 11, 2015.
Reflection:
I really enjoyed this project. I have really grown to love writhing this year and i feel like my wiring continues to grow each year. This was the first time I had ever written a sic-fi wiring piece which was very difficult for me. I didn't know how to incorporate science into my piece. I struggled with this at first but ended up asking my classmates for help. Even though this was a challenge at the same time writing was easy. In he beginning, I had no idea what I was going to write about, but then Silvia gave me the idea of incorporating a project that we did in 9th grade and making it into a story. Silvia, Mariana, and I decided to each write a story but have all three of them connect. So I guess you can say that my I kept my initial idea. I changed my draft a lot and got a lot of helpful, kind, and specific critique. I fixed my grammar, as well as added and took unnecessary things out. My first and final draft look very different in my option and I am happy that people were able to help me make it better. During this project I isolated myself from my friends while r=writing and to be honest this really helped me. I was able to write with no distractions and my though process was better. i will defiantly do this again in the future because you finish your work faster, and in my opinion turn out with a better writing product. Overall, I really enjoyed this project and I highly recommend that you do it again next year. This was one of my favorite projects, and in the ned I was very happy with the way my story turned out.

Next time that I write I want to remember to use as much detail as possible. Detail really helps with making your writing piece comes to life so I will definitely use this in the future. If were to have done one thing differently I would have used my time effectively. In the beginning of the project I didn't use my time properly. I had no idea how to start that for the first week or so I didn't really know what to write about, but after a lot of brainstorming I was able to start writing my actual writing piece.

"The Book of Us"
January- March 2015
January- March 2015
| 1 topic = 18 ideas Brief Project Overview: For this project everyone had to write a non-fiction piece about something that matters to them or defines them as a person. Our ultimate goal was to publish a book that had all of our short stories in it that we would later showcase at our annual Festival Del Sol. Every project usually has an essential question but Dr.P wanted this project to be different and I appreciate him for doing that. He wanted us to choose and explore our own essential question while writing our piece. Journey to the Final Draft Reflection: When we initially started this project I was going to write about my allergy to pork but Dr.P said to write about anything that we wanted to write about and that was the first thing that came to mind. While I began to write my first draft I realize that my pork allergy was not a topic that I could easily write about and it also didn't "define me as a person" so I decided to change my topic. I started to think about experiences and memories that have shaped my life and made me the person that I am today. Then I immediately got the ide to write about my grandfathers passing because that changed my life drastically. I began to write my draft and I just started getting ideas after ideas and that's when I knew I had chosen the perfect topic to write about. I overall felt that I didn't get enough feedback from my peers. They pretty much told me that my first draft was ready to go but I personally knew that it wasn't, so had to go back and really think about other changes that I could make. That made the process difficult but I felt like it made me a better writer. I actually changed my first draft a lot in order to be final draft ready. I overall just tried to add as much detail as possible because I had sentences that really need detail in order for them to make the reader picture what was going on. I also just added more personal experiences into my piece and really showed people my true feelings. I wanted to really allow people to connect and understand my story, and I feel like I accomplished that the more I edited my drafts. This project really allowed me to be a creative and descriptive writer and I know I will use this so much in the future. Detail is so important in a good writing piece and I'm glad I used a lot of it in this piece that I wrote. Looking back at my piece now I would change a lot of things, but I would keep some things that I wrote. The thing is I wasn't entirely proud of my piece when I published it. Towards the end I kind of got to the point where I didn't really care anymore because I got so frustrated while trying to make my piece perfect. But now looking back I realize that no writing piece will ever be perfect and that's the beauty of writing. I'm glad with my final piece but if I had the chance to rewrite I definitely would, that actually wouldn't be a bad idea and it would be cool to compare them and how different they truly are. Overall I really enjoyed this project for the simple fact that we literally PUBLISHED A BOOK! That is so crazy to me and I am so happy that I was able to contribute to the final product and be part of this amazing project. This website allows you to use your DNA and learn what percent of your DNA is from populations around the world. Each group got assigned a different person and our ultimate goal was to find out that person's ancestry. In order to find out the person's ancestry we had to use computer coding. Coding is a system of different letters and numbers that transmit messages. Coding allows you to tell something to do a certain thing and for our project we used coding to find out our person DNA. DNA is what makes you, you. It defines your physical appearance and because we all have different DNA, no person looks exactly like another. After we got our person DNA we were able to see what types of disease or syndromes our person had. We then researched the medical conditions that this person had to learn more about. Lastly we created an info graphic to showcase information about the disease as well as our person. During the #Source Code project I was the artist. I was in charge of both the infographic and codeart. I am not an artsy nor creative person so being the artist was a huge struggle for me but I wanted this role to push and challenge myself. I wanted to prove to myself that I am capable of accomplishing new things and this project allowed me to do this. Working on the infographic was very difficult because I had to find a creative way to demonstrate our information. I had to find a layout, as well as a font, and pictures that all flowed together. I actually did my infographic on piktochart, and I took hours working on it and then the day of I had to restart another infographic because it wasn't able to print on the otherwebsite that I was using. It literally took my all day but I knew that I had to finish it now matter what. I couldn't let my team down and I knew they were counting on me to finish it. Their grade as well as my grade depended on this infographic and I knew I had to finish it no matter what. Overall this project taught me to just fight through any tough situation and that things aren't always going to be perfect. It also taught me how to code which a useful skill that will be great to have in the future. |

For this project we were randomly put into groups of 3-4. The goal was to write and perform a verbatim play. Each group chose a case form the California Innocence Project and the end goal was to perform our unique plays that we had written on December 7-8 at The Onstage Playhouse.
In order for my group to have a successful exhibition we had to be very organized and take things step by step. We first started by choosing a case to base our play on. We called the lawyer that was in charge of the case and scheduled an interview and after that was done, we had to transcribe the whole thing. Each member of the group had to come up with their own individual script outline in order to get unique ideas from everybody. After we finished transcribing, we took the most important pieces and the elements that we wanted to incorporate in our actual play. After our script was finished we decided who would play which character, and we ran through our play many times. Our exhibition was on December 7, and we preformed our plays at The Onstage Playhouse located in 3rd Ave.

Looking back, the moment that sums up the project for me would be when we finished performing our play. My group and I went first and we were overjoyed that we were finally done. But what actually made exhibition ten times better was when Mack came up to me after our performance and said that I had done an awesome job. At that moment I realized that all of our hard work paid off. I strongly believe that I contributed a lot to my team. I helped with anything that my group need and finished everything that I was responsible for. Overall, I think I was a great addition to my group. I was extremely proud that my group actually created a play. It was a very stressful process, but in the end I think it turned out great and had an amazing message behind it. Throughout this project i realized that you have to make the best out of every situation and deal with whatever comes your way.

Dear 11th grade Itzel,
Wow I cant believe I am actually a junior. Its crazy how fast time goes and before you know you are going to be graduating high school, going off to a great university/college and doing your own thing. This year I want you to take chances and show yourself what you are truly capable of doing. Be different, think outside the box, create things that you though were impossible, but overall just have fun. Be prepared to work hard , because this is the year that counts. Push yourself to your limits and show High Tech High who Itzel Martinez is. Do crazy things with your friends and be someone that people look forward to hanging out with. Do you work on time, don't procrastinate, and finish honors with the best grade possible. When you feel like you have to much work, relax, take a breathe, and keep on working. Honors is a pain in the butt, but it will be completely worth it, I promise. Itzel do everything you can this year, so you can be prepared for senior year, the year that everyone looks forward to but at the same time is scared of. Only you decide whether or not junior year is unforgettable. ITZEL YOU CAN DO IT, TRUST YOURSELF!
Sincerely,
Itzel Martinez

I believe that this project is going great because we are all very focused on the main purpose of this project. I am very satisfied with my group because we get all of our work done, but at the same time we have a good time. All of my group members have a good understanding of the case file and we all helped one another if one of us didn't quite understand something. Overall, I'm loving this project and I know that our exhibition is going to be a success. All of are going to prove that 11th grade High Tech High students can give just as good presentations as law students.

- QUALITY WORK
XONER8 THEATER
OCTOBER-DECEMBER 7
Picture-Presenting Alan Gimenez Play

Dear Junior,
You're probably reading this right now because you are once again in a low point, but remember that yes things will get rough, but they're great things coming your way. You are a fighter, never forget that. You have parents that love you and would do anything in the world to make you smile. Don't give up now, keep going. Don't be afraid to take chances, and if you ever feel sad remember where you started an all the amazing things you've done so far in order to be where you are at today! You will do great things in life, just you wait. Just keep on going Junior, remember anything is possible!
Sincerely,
Itzel Martinez

For this project we were randomly put into groups of 3-4 and each group was given a different case file form the California Innocence Project. We then had to read through all the different documents that were provided and create our own Case Memo. We read through all these different files for about a month, which was helping us for the actual day of our exhibition. For exhibition we have to present our case file to different lawyers, teachers, students, and explain to them whether or not we want to push to exonerate our client and why.

The all time greatest panel
February 5, 2015
F or this project we got into groups of 2 and we all chose an important person that made an impact on the world. we later had to discuss the State of the Union speech that President Obama delivered and give our point of view as the character that we chose.
Overall i think that the moment that sums up the entire project would have to be the actual day of the panel discussion when we gave our opening statements. I just felt like at that moment, exhibiton actually became real. and our work was getting recognized by others. i contributed a lot to this project. I helped my partner with the opening statement, research and any other additional things things that had to be done. OveraLL I WAS REALLY PROUD THAT WE WERE ABLE TO ACTUALLY MAKE AND PRESENT OUR OPENING STATEMENT TO THE ENTIRE TEAM AND OTHER GUESTS THAT CAME. I WAS most proud of the fact the fact that i was able to answer questions from my characters point of view because of all the research i haD PREVIOUSLY DONE. i WAS MOST PROUD OF MY OPENING STATEMENT BECAUSE I FELT LIKE LIKE IT WAS EASY TO FOLLOW AND SHARED MY CHARACTERS INTeREST AND IMPACT. tHIS pROJECT SHOWED ME THAT IN ORDER TO HAVE A SUCCESSFUL EXHIBitioN YOU HAVE TO WORK WELL WITH YOUR PARTNER. mY PARTNER aNNA AND I WERE VERY SUCCEss because we worked well together and equally divided up the work. This was honestly such a fun project overall, and it was a great EXPERIENCE.
